Translating is a very demanding work. Many people think that it is enough to have a dictionary in order to translate. Few people understand how complicated translating is. Translators need to concentrate on every word, on the context in general, and to translate one culture into another. Words usually have several meanings, and the translator needs to find the right one for on the context. In large translation projects there is an issue of consistency. Words or phrases which are repeated throughout the text should always be translated in the same way.
Translation software (translation tools) made it easier for translators provide consistent translations. There are many translation tools on the market. Professional translation agencies use them every day. Without them, translation teams wouldn’t be able to provide consistent translations. Team Coordinators and Project Managers supervise the process, but they can’t make the translation process easier. That’s what translation software applications, also called translation tools, do. Strictly technical texts have to be translated extremely accurately, so that the professionals who use them would be able to understand them.
Proofreaders are irreplaceable members of translation teams. They provide quality control of the translated texts and  make sure that everything that has been translated fits into the text concept. Translators often make mistakes if they translate enormous texts and their concentration can’t always be on a maximum level.
Translators are often required to translate descriptions of some products. Every product has its market name. For example, if a phrase like ‘ silicone wristbands ’ wasn’t translated accurately, the potential customers wouldn’t be able to understand the product description, and the full meaning of the product name would be lost. That would be an extremely serious mistake, and the translation agency that produced such a translation would lose respect in the eyes of the company that ordered the translation. (Not to mention that the company that ordered the translation would lose the potential customers.)
Software localization is a special type of translation. Localization is not only the translation of one program into another language, but also its adopting for the local market and the local users. People often ask if localization is really necessary. They assume that everybody knows English language good enough to be able to use any software. However, if one only thinks of medical equipment, the necessity of localization will become quite clear. If medical staff wouldn’t know exactly what some of the functions are for, they could put patients’ lives in danger.
Translation should be done extremely skillfully, with great attention to details, and it should always be supervised and proofread. Only in that way can the quality of translation be achieved.
